As your baby’s hand co-ordination improves, he can really indulge his fascination with toys and other interesting objects. When he gets hold of something new, the experimenting begins. He’ll shake, bang, drop and throw it. And of course, he’ll put it in his mouth. He’s also beginning to see how objects relate to each other. For example, he’ll gradually understand that smaller things fit inside bigger ones but not the other way round. You can encourage his explorations with stacking cups and shape sorters.

Your toddler’s brain is becoming more sophisticated every day. He can now form images in his mind, organise categories and arrange things in order. His memory is improving and he’s learning to identify basic colours and to count to ten. Encourage him by playing matching and memory games. No need to buy anything special - a laundry basket of socks will work nicely. Just ask your toddler to find the ones that match. A bonus: he’ll love helping you!

Put two parents in a room together and sooner or later they’re bound to start comparing their babies’ accomplishments. This game of one-upmanship (which some doctors call the Baby Olympics) may heat up now because individual children start developing at very different rates. As babies begin tackling more complicated skills such as walking and talking - which can take months or even years to master - they all start developing at their own pace. As long as your baby is making steady progress, you have nothing to worry about. And if anybody suggests otherwise, tell her that Einstein didn’t talk until he was four years old.

Many babies are pulling themselves up now, grabbing on to any available piece of furniture and then standing while holding onto it in a wobbly way. Some babies walk as early as eight months, others not until well into their second year. All are still well within the normal range. Most babies work out how to stand up fairly easily on their own. The thing that stumps many of them is sitting back down again! When your little one pulls himself to a stand and then cries for you to sit him back down, don’t rush to pick him up. Instead, show him how to bend his knees so his journey back down doesn’t end with such a thud.

Finally, my next venture gets its beak out of the door. Pimp My Tweetz is the top secret “street” venture I have been joking about. Only street because I used a Z in Tweetz.
Basically this is a service to customise your Twitter profile with a custom design, background, picture & colours.
Have a look, let me know what you think - Pimp My Tweetz.

I produced a wee 2 sided leaflet for an Inverness client 4½ years ago. Hadn’t heard from him since till he got back in touch for some more leaflets. I couldn’t better the price of his local printer but we got talking and he requested a Wee Web Page based on the leaflet from 2005. Very weird to be working on something based on something I had done such a long time ago.
Anyway, here it is, Alan Jones Associates (based in Inverness).

Any day now, if he hasn’t already, your baby may try feeding himself. He may let you know about his new goal by grabbing a spoon and, eventually, guiding it into his mouth. If you can, let him experiment and forgive the mess ? it’s helping him learn a new skill. You’ll have to be patient too, since he won’t fully master the trick of feeding himself till after his first birthday. If you haven’t tried already, why not make mealtimes family times? It’s never too soon for eating together to become a habit and it may give you and your partner a chance to catch up with each other. Some couples find that they prefer to feed their baby first and then have some time together. Like so many things throughout this first year, it’s a question of finding what suits your family.

Jack’s School Christmas Party
Posted by Rose on 8 January 2010 in Jack
A little piece about Jack’s Christmas party appeared on the school blog site today.
Yes - Jack is the only child in uniform. No - he didn’t mind at all and told us other children were too (when you look at the pictures you can see he wasn’t).
He looks so tiny compared to the rest of his class mates!

At this age, a simple game of peek-a-boo can absolutely fascinate your baby. He’s starting to understand object permanence (things don’t go away forever when they leave his sight), and he loves games where people or things appear and disappear. In fact, one of the easiest ways to keep a seven month old occupied is by hiding an object under a blanket for him to discover. If you get tired of peek-a-boo, try other classic baby games such as pat-a-cake, rolling things backwards and forwards, or banging different things together to hear the sounds they make.

You’ve always known that you and your baby are two separate creatures, but he hasn’t. To him, the two of you are one - he has no identity of his own yet. When you put him in front of a mirror, he doesn’t even realise that the baby he sees is himself. But this month he’ll make a huge mental leap and finally understand that he’s an individual, with his own body, thoughts, and feelings. This jump in understanding opens the door to him growing emotional and physical independence, which will take years to fully develop.

Your toddler may be humming and singing simple tunes by now, even using his growing vocabulary to make three-word sentences like “Bird fly high.” He can probably also understand opposites, like hot drink/cold drink or big toy/little toy and put the names to pictures in his books. You can encourage him by singing songs together, asking him questions and playing fun word games.
Happy New Year to you all!

Just popped on to wish you all a very happy and healthy 2010!
For the first time in 6 years, Ed and I actually got to do something for Hogmanay! We had been invited along to Lizzie and Richie’s (end of the street) and were even kindly offered to go along with the kids - we just couldn’t do it with 3 especially with Noah just out of hospital. Ed and I had decided to go along in shifts, I was going to go for 2 hours then come home, then Ed could go along. All fine and good and a wee (well 2 hours) night out for us both and that was going to do us fine - it was a treat as lets face it, when do Ed and I ever get to go out as a couple in the evening? That’s right - never!
At 4 yesterday we were sitting playing in the livingroom when we spotted Natalie and David walking up our front path, they had popped in on their way to Lizzie’s to tell us that they and Katie had been chatting and decided that it would be nice for Ed and I to get to go out as a couple for a change, and they had arranged it between the 3 of them to each come along and do a shift of sitting in the house watching the boys for us.
How kind and wonderful is that - giving up their own drinking & partying time to give Ed and I little time together away from the house and everything that has gone on the past month.
I can’t say thank you enough to them all - I had a lovely time and for a change I haven’t got up this morning feeling grumpy and let down because it feels like the whole world has been out partying aside from me.
This last year has truly been a testing year, we’ve had irritating and p*ss taking clients, people who have tested us to the limits, a very very poorly baby boy and 2 other children who still require our care and attention. I think Ed and I have been out once as a couple the entire year, to Bryn and Rowena’s wedding (unless you count when I was in labour!)so thank you so very, very much for making last night a lovely night for us, for sitting in our house with the children causing no disruption at all making it much easier for me at least to go, and for having the kindness and consideration to even suggest doing it in the first place.
I may not be entirely keen on the estate I live in, but I have some fantastic and wonderful friends around here. Thank you so much!
The kids are stirring now so I will do the rest of the blog later tonight when we come back home.

Has your baby turned into a bouncing machine? This game is fun for him now if he can support his weight on his legs. What’s more, he can probably sit unsupported, which will free his hands for exploring. At this age he’ll also probably start reaching for things and scooping them up with one hand. You can encourage his independence and new skills by placing a toy just out of his reach. After a few tries, he’ll be able to lean forward to grab it and then straighten himself again. You may notice him turn things round now, finding out what they look like upside down or sideways. And of course, he’ll wonder what everything tastes like, too.
If your baby has started teething, you can expect his first teeth to appear about now. His lower front teeth will probably break through first. But a few babies start with their top teeth and others don’t produce any teeth at all until their first birthday, so if yours is one of them, don’t worry. In the meantime, though, don’t forget that baby teeth need brushing as soon as they appear.
PS - Happy 61 months to Jack as well!

Another Wee Web Page finished, just in time for Christmas. My friend Richie Gilbert wanted a website to provide a wee front for his limited company Gilbert IT. Happy to oblige.
