Back on the 13th August Jack had a little accident, resulting in a fractured thumb. He had gotten out of his bed in a bad mood, and was having a huge tantrum over breakfast. It was at the stage where he was going nuts in the hall and Ed shut the kitchen door on him — not realising that he had put his hands inside the hinge and his thumb was trapped inside.
His thumb was stuck for about 10 seconds, but it was enough to bend the thumb completely out of shape. Ed bundled him into the car and took him up to Accident & Emergency, only to be told that the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh is an adults only hospital! I am quite sure you can imagine how impressed Ed was, and he insisted that a Doctor took a look at Jack, but the Doctor deemed Jack fit to travel and they had to head up to the Sick Kids instead.
Jack was quite happy to go up, although he went from crying in extreme agony to laughing and joking with Ed. They were seen quite quickly and Jack was sent through to x–ray, where they spotted the small fracture in the tip of his thumb.
He only needed a plastic case and some tape put on it, and he was fit to go with a follow up appointment the day before he started school.
He managed really well with his thumb, when he got home he was going down the slide head first with his hands out front! He just learned to protect his thumb as he played.
The only problem we had was with showering as he wasn’t to get the tape wet — so Ed came up with a nifty (if not daft) solution to the problem…
Upon his return to the Sick Kids he just had a quick check up, given some tape to keep the shell on and told that he didn’t need to go back. The shell came off last weekend, and all seem’s to be well with his thumb. He even managed to keep his nail!
